Bizarre? No, not really.....
As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted by any manner of things over the past month, my wife and I were about to take our sexual exploration into a whole new sphere by attending the Birmingham Bizarre Bazaar (www.brumbazaar.co.uk).
It had been recommended by a friend of ours and although we have never classed ourselves as being into any form of sexual fetish, she pointed out that we had said we were looking to explore a little more "and anyway, fetish is whatever you want it to be. It doesn't have to be tying each other up, dungeons and leather and whips and all that. Fetish can be tickling each other's genitals, Tantric sex, using dildos and vibrators all over each other, even having sex in the kitchen, rather than the bedroom, for a change!''
So, we girded our loins (as it were...) and decided we'd go. And once we had, there was never any thought of backing out. We arrived at lunchtime and found the venue (a nightclub in Birmingham's Gay Quarter) already busy with people of all ages, all shapes and sizes and (very obviously) of all sexual interests.
There were people in extravagant costumes who were very obviously going to the aftershow party, but there were plenty (like us) in T-shirts and jeans. Some of the younger visitors wore leather but that was probably more to do with their status as music-loving students than a desire to be outrageous.
What brought us all together was our love of all things sexual. As we entered, the first thing we spotted was a stall selling sexy underwear, vibrators, dildos - and nipple clamps. The vibrators and dildos ranged from small four-inch gold and silver models to an extremely-lifelike 12 inches.
There were stalls of erotic literature, masks, blindfolds, harnesses for dildos; I purchased a pair of black leather see-through pants, my wife's eye was taken by a low-cut black leather basque. And as we progressed around the stalls, we understood what our friend had said about fetish being whatever you want it to be. Yes, there were wooden floggers, but there were also ones made of feathers; yes, there were cuffs and stocks and blindfolds but there were also nipple tassels, fur coats, high-heeled shoes - even a lady selling cupcakes with some very over-18 designs.
We bought a tickling stick, would you believe? About six inches long and covered in feathers, it has quickly become a key part of our sexual repertoire. It's astonishing how sensitive the naked body can be to the touch of feathers.
The BBB is held on the third Sunday of every month and we would highly recommend it for anyone who is looking to expand their sexual horizons, see what's out there, think outside the box.
We had to miss this month's event bcause of a prior engagement but we're going back in August, with some friends we know through business who we would never have expected were into this type of event.
But then again, they probably never thought we were into it, either.....
